March 21st, '98 @ The Burning Sun house...

Left With Nothing
Mourn the Sun
Decoy
Emergency Brake Failure

Okay well I can definitely say that I was there from start to finish for this one... when we showed up only the kids in the first three bands were there... eventually more people showed up of course... If you've never been to "The Burning Sun" I will describe it for you... the shows are played in the basement of a house... if you are tall you will in fact hit your head on the ceiling... during sets, the only light is courtesy of strings of  red christmas lights.. ( I love that)!
The first band to play was Emergency Brake Failure... from canada... the vocalist had a "winnepeg straight edge" jacket on... gotta love when kids reprazent!!!... anyway (this was 2 weeks ago for me so I can't remember exactly what they sounded like... I'll get better at this I promise!)  I liked em, the raddest part was that the drummer was fourteen years old...
It didn't take Decoy very long to set up... two of the four members had been playing in EBF... more kids had shown up by this time... they had a few slower songs and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves... the band threw out the trivia question "Who is Jean Gault?" for the prize of $5.  The question was answered correctly to the amazment of the band who admitted that they didn't actually have 5 bucks to give... maybe they didn't know that there's a band around here with the same name... (it's a character in an Ayn Rand book if you're wondering)...
Next was Mourn the Sun. I usually like them, that night I was a little disgusted by the porn that they had displayed all over the amps and walls around them... I don't know what statement they were trying to make with that... but whatever... later I saw that someone had written on the wall     "straight edge: respecting animals more than women"    that's a little something that needs to be changed in the scene... but I'm not gonna go off... they played a good set, lotsa metal parts, you gotta see the bass player Tyler headbang through the entire set!
      As the final band,
Left With Nothing took the stage (filling in for Everything Went Black I believe).  They played from their set list that was still there from a show a week or two before, a lot of great new songs... I can't wait for those kids to start recording again!... There wasn't a lot of dancing at this particular show, but the canucks were avidly singing along and got the honor of shouting "1, 2, Fife Crew!" to start off  'No Ties'.  I seriously reccommend checking them out if you get the chance.
All in all it was a good show.
Hope you enjoyed my "review".

March 28th '98: @ The Soulhaus
Zao
Harkonen
Mourn the Sun
The Jean Gault Line

This show was so packed!  The Soulhaus is in fact a house, and the shows are held in the living room.  My condolences to Darren, who by the end of the show, had a brand new big hole in his wall... but it's now covered up with a poster so it looks fine...  I think that a lot of kids didn't go to this show because Zao is a christian band... I'm very not religious but I won't shut out a band just because that's their thing... as long as they don't bother me with it... actually, it's a good thing that more people didn't show up cause it was too overstuffed already!  There were a lot of kids in Strongarm and Overcome t-shirts... I heard that there was some tension between the religious and the straight edge (not that you can't be both) but I didn't experience any personally so that's as far as I'm commenting on the issue....

The Jean Gault Line opened up.  Their really fast style (13 second song!) isn't really my thing, but they exuded a lot of emotion in every short song.  They have a lot of songs about the government as I recall...

Mourn the Sun came on second... they played a continuous flow of metally hardcore... they had a lot of good emotion too... in fact, all the bands that night did in my opinion... I enjoyed their set... standing up front being blinded by all the camera flashes.

Harkonen only got to play about 2 songs... they were plagued by ferocious equipment problems... and did I hear someone broke a finger?  Maybe not I wasn't sure what I heard... what they played was great... I liked them when they used to play shows last year... now they have Aaron as their new vocalist and a bit of a new style, and I like them even more... go see em if you can, they're rad...

On came the headliners Zao.  I had never seen them before, or heard much of their stuff for that matter... but now I plan on getting one of their cd's soon... I was totally impressed... at least they only mentioned Jesus once, and said that they weren't trying to preach... they had a bit of equipment problems themselves... apparantly a regular occurence at a Zao show by the way they talked... the bass drum broke... anyway, I was impressed and was told by friends that they didn't even play their best songs.... if you like that new school metal-core style, and can handle (or I guess if you enjoy) the occasional god reference,  check these guys out...
